Online Teaching & LearningThis is a featured page

The Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) discusses five pillars of quality in online education. You can add to the effective practices within those pillars at their wiki. Teaching International students at a distance is of particular interest to us, and we welcome your input to the effective practices here.

Clerkin (2004) considers that a comprehensive plan is needed to prepare online students, particularly in consideration of international students. Such a plan for reaching out to students leads to student satisfaction with their learning experience. Clerkin (2004) and her colleagues at Berkley College consider ' a variety of ways to prepare their online students to assure competence, confidence, and a successful online course experience. Among these include: - An online orientation site for its online degree students. - A required online preparatory course that prepares them to understand the particulars of online learning and navigate the course management system. - An online library orientation. - A special one-stop shopping center online degree site with weekly messages from advisors and student services. - An online tutoring site that is always available to help students with course material and writing assistance. - Ongoing faculty and technical support'. A media-rich orientation is particularly important. Kurucz (2006), although discussing teaching international students in a face-to-face (F2F) environment, also considers that orientationto how institutions work is important at the outset. Such orientations need to 'include experiential exercises and not just tours of the campus and lectures about rules', and is an opportunity to introduce mentoring as an important component (Kurucz, 2006).
